pharmachologic effect

Betadine is an antiseptic and disinfectant drug. Released from the complex with polyvinylpyrrolidone on contact with skin and mucous membranes, iodine forms iodamine cells with proteins, coagulates them and causes the death of microorganisms. Has a bactericidal effect on gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria (with the exception of Mycobacterium tuberculosis).

Active against bacteria, fungi, viruses, protozoa.

Suppositories are water-soluble and non-irritating.

Indications

  - treatment of the patient's skin before and after surgical interventions (including injections, punctures, biopsy, blood sampling);
  - treatment of wounds, burns, trophic ulcers, bedsores, superinfectious dermatitis;
  - hygienic treatment of patients

Application during pregnancy and lactation

Betadine is not recommended for use from 3 months of pregnancy and lactation.

If it is necessary to conduct therapy, the doctor decides on the appointment of the drug individually.

It is necessary to monitor the function of the thyroid gland in newborns and infants whose mothers used Betadine.

Contraindications

  - hyperthyroidism;
  - adenoma of the thyroid gland;
  - Dühring's dermatitis herpetiformis;
  - simultaneous use of radioactive iodine;
  - children under 8 years old;

The drug should be used with caution during pregnancy and lactation (breastfeeding).

Side effects

Perhaps: local manifestation of an allergic reaction to iodine (itching, hyperemia), which requires discontinuation of the drug.

Interaction

Betadine is incompatible with other disinfectants and antiseptics, especially those containing alkalis, enzymes and mercury.

How to take, course of administration and dosage

The Betadine solution can be used neat or as an aqueous solution at a 1:10 or 1: 100 dilution.

For disinfection of the skin in its healthy areas, a solution is used undiluted with an exposure of 1-2 minutes.

When treating wounds, burns, bacterial and fungal skin lesions, an aqueous solution of Betadine is used at a dilution of 1:10.

For hygienic treatment of the patient, an aqueous solution of Betadine is used at a dilution of 1: 100.

Overdose

There is no data on an overdose of Betadine.

Special instructions

Dilution of Betadine solution must be done immediately before use. The diluted solution cannot be stored!

The drug solution should be dark brown in color. Discoloration of the solution indicates the destruction of the polyvinylpyrrolidone iodine complex and a decrease in the effectiveness of the drug.

Light and temperatures above 40 ° C accelerate the decomposition of the active substance of the drug.
In case of dysfunction of the thyroid gland, the drug can be used only under medical supervision.

Coloring on skin and fabrics can be easily washed off with water. After contact with the drug, avoid contact with the eyes.
